Overview

The Sillar Route is a fascinating journey on the outskirts of Arequipa that reveals the origin and history of sillar, the emblematic white stone used in many buildings in the city. Along this route, visitors can explore old quarries, observe the master stonemasons in action and understand how this volcanic stone has shaped not only the architecture, but also the identity and pride of Arequipa, known as the 'White City'.

  • 8:30 am – We will pick you up from your hotel to start the route leaving the city to the quarry of Añashuayco.
  • On the way, we will know details about the constructions based on the volcanic rock (ashlar) making a stop at the Mirador de Zamacola, where we can appreciate the 3 volcanoes from another angle themselves surrounding the city such as: Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu.
  • Upon reaching the quarries we will observe the immense cliff the songs themselves.
  • Then we move to the Culebrillas ravine, reaching this point we will make a 20 -minute walk inside the small cannon that was formed by the passage of water, which has walls of 15 to 20 meters.
  • At the end of the walk we can observe petroglyphs made by the Wari culture more than a thousand years ago, we will observe the apachetas that are stone formations put on top of the other that are a symbol of thanks to nature and also attraction of good luck that cause a mystical sensation.
  • Return to the city.
