ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THESE WONDERFUL ISLANDS

The diversity of the fauna of the Galapagos Islands is impressive. For more than 4 million years, a large number of endemic animals such as mammals, land birds, seabirds and reptiles have developed.  The Galapagos fauna has its ancestors in the continent and had an evolutionary process of approximately 4 million years. Among the endemic species are petrels, cormorants, Galapagos hawks, penguins, land iguanas, marine iguanas and many more. Regarding the flora of Galapagos, there are about 560 species of 180 endemic plants and about 700 species were introduced as a result of colonization, some of these types were brought from the continent to be applied in agriculture, in other cases for ornamental purposes, and in other cases introduced accidentally.

WHEN TO VISIT GALAPAGOS?

There are two factors that will influence when to travel to Galapagos: On one hand, the weather, and on the other, the water conditions. Rain or sunshine is as vital as the currents because some marine animals are more comfortable in cold water and vice versa.

From December to May: When the Pacific current predominates. The water is calmer and with higher temperatures (about 28°C) and therefore bathing is more enjoyable. However, there is less life underwater and the probability of seeing some species is a little lower.

From June to November: Due to the water currents coming from South America. The sea tends to be rougher and in these months the water is colder (over 22°C) and the use of bathing suits is recommended. The excellent news is that there is more underwater life!

July and August:  This are the months with the roughest seas. However, the reward for doing so is magnificent because the good thing about this time of year is that marine species like cooler water temperatures and that is when you can see the most marine life snorkeling or diving.
