The Presbítero Maestro Cemetery, established between 1805 and 1808, is the first municipal cemetery in Latin America, located on the former outskirts of Lima, and it remains an important resting place for many of Peru’s historical figures. This cemetery, combining neoclassical elements with a solemn atmosphere, houses the largest collection of 19th-century European marble sculptures in Latin America.

During a tour of the cemetery, visitors can admire not only the impressive funerary architecture but also the monuments and tombs of key figures in Peru’s history, such as José de la Riva-Agüero, the first president of the Republic of Peru, poet Ricardo Palma, independence leader Juan Pardo de Zela, and many others. Notable sites include the Pantheon of National Heroes, where those who fought for independence are buried, and the Pantheon of Teachers, dedicated to educators and influential figures in the country’s development.
